Temperature
With a mean temperature of 14.8°C, this June has been slightly warmer than average in Coventry, 0.3°C above the 30-year climatological normal for the city (1971-2000).
Even so, it has still been the coolest June in our region since 1999 (13.9°C).
Looking back through the record books, we find that only four June months have been cooler than 2008 in the past 20 years (1990, 1991, 1997 and 1999).
Rainfall
This has been the driest June in Coventry (37.2mm) for two years; there was just 25.0mm of rain in June 2006.
Only six June months locally have been drier than June this 2008 in the past 20 years (1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2006).
As a contrast June 2007 was the wettest June in Coventry since rainfall records were first kept in the city in 1870.
A year ago, the end of June marked the wettest first six months of any year in the city’s rainfall record (519.7mm). This year’s January to
June rainfall total is 27% lower (379.9mm) than that of last year, but still 21% above the 30 average for Coventry (1971-2000). Sunshine Although it has only been an average month temperature-wise, it has been remarkably sunny with 219.2 hours of sunshine, 24% above
the 30-year June sunshine average for Coventry.. It has been the sunniest June for just two years however; in June 2006 we recorded 238.8 hours of sunshine.
Even so, only five June months have recorded more sunshine than June 2008 since 1976 (1984, 1989, 1994, 1990, 2006).
As a footnote, this has been the windiest June in Coventry for 6 years.
